In standard joint sealing, choosing between high modulus and low modulus is critical. High modulus sealants are stiffer and are typically used in structural bonding. However, for expansion joints, movement joints, and perimeter sealing around windows and doors, a low modulus sealant is highly recommended.
When temperature changes cause building substrates to move, a low modulus silicone sealant stretches easily, exerting very low force on the bond line. This prevents adhesive failure (separation of the sealant from the substrate) or cohesive failure (tearing of the sealant).
